Lack of Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is a major challenge for communities nationwide, and Vanderburgh, Warrick and Posey counties are no exception.

In 2018, CAJE gained a commitment from Mayor Lloyd Winnecke to allocate $500,000 into Evansville’s Affordable Housing Fund (AHF). The AHF is a trust that provides financial support to low-income people wishing to purchase a home and to developers looking to construct or rehabilitate low-income housing.

Since Evansville’s city council had to approve the allocation, CAJE members attended months of council meeting, sharing personal stories and urging council members to approve the request. Nearly 60 CAJE supporters turned out for the council’s 2018 budget hearing. In the end, the addition of $500,000 to the AHF was approved by the city council with an 8:1 vote.
